Matthew Benchimol was born and raised in Gainesville, FL. After High School, he attended the University of Central Florida (UCF) and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science, Pre-Law and obtained two minors in History and Anthropology. Eventually, he found himself back at UCF to obtain a Master of Arts in Political Science, International Studies. Upon graduation, Matthew commssioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Active Duty Component through UCF Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) in May of 2015.
After fulfilling his three year active duty commitment, he decided to return back to his hometown and pursue a Doctorate of Philosophy in Political Science at the University of Florida – and continue his new found passion for research.
Matthew’s research interests are broad. His current interests are the international determinants of war and peace. Specifically, the strategic calculus of third-party intervention in civil wars and their expected versus actual effect on state foreign policy, relations, and civil conflict. His future interests are in Latin American politics and political methodology. Broadly, Matthew intends to examine ways to integrate interdisciplinary approaches to find the nexus between the psycho-social identity in post conflict societies.
